Coming Soon to a Museum Near You!!

It’s my favorite time of the year here at the Science Museum of Long Island. I do love Summer, but Autumn brings so many wonderful things to the table. September always brings back schools for field trips, which is a part of our curriculum that is really near and dear to my heart. I can remember being a young lad, going out to various local museums and preserves and doing many of the same activities that we do here at SMLI.

Many parents are looking for a safe fun place to bring their kids this Halloween. If you’re one of them, then look no further. On October 31, we will be having our annual Halloween event. We had so much fun last year,  we tried to come up with new ways to make it bigger and better. We will of course have all the classics: Crafts, Creepy Critters, and Slime. We’ve even redesigned our spooky walk so that it is better than ever. And last but not least, we have a new attraction called The Spiders Lair! Come down to the basement to try to navigate through a webbed obstacle course (Mission Impossible style) and make it through to the other side. Real Spiders not included.

Also, to give a little shout out for the month of November, I want to plug our Afterschool programs a bit. November brings some great topics. The kindergarten program is called “On the Hunt” and they will be going on treasure hunts and learning about star navigation. The first and second graders will be solving mystery’s in a month called, “Who Did it?!?!” The third and fourth graders (the group I teach) will be making a simple machines that will work together to achieve a common goal. And the fifth and up group will be looking really small, by studying microbiology, a topic about all sorts of creatures invisible to the naked eye.

My point is, there are some really exciting topics coming up, so sign up now and be a part of it. We look forward to seeing you!

I'M BACK!!!!

As some of you might have realized, I was not around during this year’s Summer Camp.  It was the first time in the nine years I have been at the Science Museum that I wasn’t working at camp.  I was actually out on Maternity Leave.  Over the summer I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.  And even though I loved being home with him for two months I did miss teaching at SMLI.

I have now returned from my leave and excited to be back during my favorite time of year, fall.  Being at the Science Museum during autumn is the best time to enjoy our 36 acre preserve, especially when you join one of our classes.  The after school programs during this month will be venturing out, since the weather is just perfect for learning outdoors.  Monday’s holiday program, Pioneering Spirit, will have the children out on the preserve for shelter building and campfire making.  Even our Halloween event on October 31st will bring guests outside for hayrides and a spooky walk in the woods followed by marshmallow roasting.

Stop on by Leeds Pond Preserve to enjoy the sight of the leaves changing colors and to see the Museum get transformed into a Halloween haunted house.  While here, stop in to sign up for one of our many upcoming programs and also stop in to say hello.  I look forward to seeing all of our members I missed during the summer and of course would love to meet any new members who have now joined the Science Museum.

Registration is now open for our Halloween Family Fun Party on October 31st from 6-8 PM.

Please give us a call today at (516) 627-9400 EXT. 10 to register.
Only $20/CHILD and $5/ADULT

Hello Fellow Scientists!!!!

Hello Fellow Scientists!!!!

Happy Fall everyone! SMLI finished up its annual summer camp program at the end of August, and my goodness did time fly! It was a wonderful summer and I think everyone, children and teachers included, had tons of fun. But now school is back in session, which means lots of things for us here at the museum.

At the end of last week we had our first Holiday Workshops of the season; Seas the Day and Amazing Autumn. If you didn’t know, even when school is closed, SMLI is open for young scientists. Children grades Nursery-7th can spend their day off with us doing all sorts of scientific experiments, activities, crafts and more. This year we started what will hopefully become a new tradition; pumpkin sling-shots! One of the teachers, Mr. Dan, worked hard building a sling-shot that the kids were able to use to shoot small pumpkins clear across SMLI’s field! It was a great surprise for the kids, and they became experts at using the sling-shot by the end of the day.

Speaking of pumpkins, Halloween is just around the corner! SMLI is already in full gear, preparing for our annual Family Halloween Event, which will be taking place on Halloween night this year! Families can expect lots of fun activities including; spooky animals, Halloween crafts, spooky walks through the woods, and more! Hope to see you there!

Registration is now open for our Halloween Family Fun Party on October 31st from 6-8 PM.
